Family Feud

It’s Thanksgiving Day. Half the family is sporting burnt orange; the other half is wearing maroon. The tension is rising as everyone gathers around the TV, but of course keeping the separation in between them. Then the start of another long and vicious rivalry within the family begins when the football game starts. In this essay I will discuss the holiday rivalry between a family, and the real meaning of those fights.

The room feels up with trash talking and pointing fingers all through out the football game. HA! A fumble here, oh look! An incomplete passes there, ewe-ing and awe-ing for a good three hours. Poor grandparents have to change outfits during half time to avoid any quarrels, even though it still happens because of which they wear first. This is the one thing everyone looks forward to when Thanksgiving comes. It’s a good reason to fight and bicker with the family with out anyone really knowing if the feelings are real or just about the game.

Every family is in competition with each other. It starts off as siblings, and then continues on to adulthood. Who has the best job, the biggest house, the faster car? After children come along it turn into who has the prettiest babies, the fastest learners? As time goes by it involves into which kid is the most popular, the best athlete or best singer. It’s a never ending cycle that will continue on until the end of time. It’s natural for a family to be in competition, but at what cost?

In a family of smart, healthy, gorgeous people, my family is the lone duck. Up until several years ago my family was the only one that lived in Corpus. We were the only family to go to a public school and the only family that couldn’t afford the best clothes or cars. So every year my family would dread going to Thanksgiving. My mom would use the defense tactic of petty from everyone. She always volunteers to do so much that by the end of the day she would be extremely stressed out and everyone would help her. I am quite the opposite, I just stayed away. The only good part about Thanksgiving is that it is in Corpus because the grandparents live here, so I always went off with my friends as much as I could.

Now that I have grown up and matured I see that every family has their flaws. I finally became old enough to hear the gossip. My mom still takes on too much but I realize she actually likes it that way, though I suffer. And I have learned to stick around more than just to eat. The family still fights like crazy, still points out every flaw, but it is what every family does and it is how every family copes with the problems in their own life.
