Idea Two- Super Mom

Divorce is an all too common thing in the United States. Marriage doesn’t hold the same prestige that it has in the past. Even though divorce is looked upon as heartbreaking and pitiful, something amazing has been born from it, the single mother who does it all. In this essay I will describe the day to day hardships that a single mother goes through from the perspective of the child.

I was 7-years-old chasing my sister around Wal-Mart distracted by the fact that the card has been declined. “Try it again please!” my mother said with a cracking voice. Now I wasn’t your normal kid. I noticed things and knew more about life than most kids my age. I knew exactly what was going on and I carefully walked over to my mom, touched her arm ever so slightly and told her we will come back another day. The background of our life is the typical one, the father cheated and left with the younger girl. But my mother is nothing but typical.

Raising three children while working one job is hard for any one person; but my mom has been doing the unthinkable for ten years now by working two jobs, attending night classes at college, and raising three kids. She has done it all. Scout leader for five years for my brother’s Boy Scout group, she was also the leader of my sister’s Girl Scout group. She has made it to all our sporting events which include tennis, basketball, kickball, volleyball, and track. She was able to make it every banquet and award ceremony. She was even a band booster while I was in high school. She did it all with every grace in the world; and she did it all while maintaining 3.7 and higher GPA in college.

Waking up to the keyboard tapping away at 3 in the morning has been a routine for me. The passion that she has for school is something I admire and want to encompass. The tear shed has been enormous, the stress almost unbearable, but still she conquers and task that is presented to her. Curves have been broken and enemies have been made, but the drive to do better has never calmed. If she made a 97 she asked why, and she was never afraid to tell the professor they were wrong. I am extremely proud to say that after 9 years in college she will finally graduate with her bachelors in Business Administration, and do it with honors.

It’s unknown to many the amount of hardships that a single mother goes through. The stress, the tears, the joys, and the growth is all worth it in the end when she can stand tall and say that I accomplished my goals and I’m a better person for it.
